Scandinavian Splendor  :   From Fjords to Northern Lights

Our Nordic adventure was a long-awaited journey, a dream that took us across the picturesque landscapes of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. From exploring vibrant cities to experiencing the serene beauty of fjords and the mesmerizing dance of the Northern Lights, this trip was a perfect blend of natural wonders, cultural richness, and unforgettable moments.

Unlike a typical guided tour, we meticulously planned every detail of this trip, making it a truly personalized experience. With a mix of historical landmarks, scenic train rides, culinary delights, and thrilling activities like dog sledding, each day offered something unique and memorable.

Here’s a day-by-day account of our journey through the Scandinavian Splendor—a trip filled with adventure, discovery, and cherished family moments.

Day 1 - Oct 18, Friday 2024 : Touchdown in Copenhagen - A Scandinavian Welcome

The alarm buzzed early at 5:00 AM, marking the start of an exciting journey. The suitcases were packed the night before, so it was a smooth start as my wife Bijili, my daughter Deepali, and I geared up for our trip to Denmark. A friend kindly dropped us at Dubai International Airport (DXB), and as expected, Terminal 3 was bustling with activity.

After checking in our baggage and breezing through security, we headed straight to the Marhaba Lounge for a hearty breakfast. Soon, it was time to board our flight, Emirates EK 151, to Copenhagen. The flight took off at 8:00 AM sharp.

In-Flight Experience

The journey was pleasant and comfortable. Emirates never fails to impress with its in-flight service – drinks and lunch were served promptly, keeping us refreshed throughout the six-hour journey.

At around 1:15 PM local time, we landed in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. The first impression? Quiet and organized. The immigration process was smooth and quick, quite the contrast to the hustle of Dubai Airport.

Arrival in Copenhagen

With our baggage in hand, Bijili and Deepali made a quick stop to exchange currency for Danish Krone, and we stepped out to catch a taxi. The crisp, cool air greeted us as we got our first glimpse of a Scandinavian city. The 25-minute drive to the Copenhagen Marriott Hotel was scenic and refreshing.

The hotel didn’t disappoint. We had opted for a water-view room, and the view was simply stunning—a perfect welcome to this picturesque city. After unpacking a few essentials, the three of us set out to explore the city.

Exploring Copenhagen

The first thing that caught our attention was the sheer number of bicycles. More bicycles than cars! The city has an impressive cycling culture, complete with dedicated bike lanes and strict rules—no riding against traffic here.

Our first stop was Nyhavn, the vibrant waterfront and canal district famous for its brightly colored 17th and 18th-century townhouses. We took a taxi from the hotel, which, to our surprise, was equipped with a card machine—a handy feature since most transactions here are cashless.

At Nyhavn, we indulged in hot dogs—juicy, flavorful, and just what we needed after our journey. Fueled up, we hopped on a canal tour, a one-hour guided ride through the city’s waterways. The open-roof boat allowed us to soak in the sights and learn about Copenhagen’s iconic landmarks.

den03

The canal tour was a perfect way to get our bearings and appreciate the beauty of this Scandinavian gem. By the end of the tour, we were back at Nyhavn, ready for dinner.

A Culinary Stop at Broens Street Food

From Nyhavn, we strolled to Broens Street Food, an eclectic spot offering a variety of cuisines. The food scene here is vibrant but surprisingly, shops and eateries close much earlier than in Dubai. This was a cultural shift for us, coming from a city that never sleeps.

After a satisfying dinner, we found ourselves at a crossroads. With Uber unavailable in Copenhagen and our Bolt account not activated, we decided to walk back to the hotel. It was a 40-minute walk, but Deepali’s enthusiasm kept us going. The city’s quiet charm, even late in the evening, made the walk a memorable experience.

den04

Wrapping Up Day 1

Back at the Copenhagen Marriott, we called it a night, reflecting on the day’s highlights. The city had already charmed us with its vibrant streets, cultural landmarks, and delicious food.

Day 2 - Oct 19, Saturday : A Sunny Day - Exploring Copenhagen

The day began with a picturesque sunrise over the water, as seen from our hotel room at the Copenhagen Marriott. The golden rays reflecting off the calm water created a perfect backdrop for some early morning photos. While savoring breakfast in the room, we stumbled upon a funny yet unforgettable moment. The vase on our table, holding a single flower, caught our curiosity. Thinking it was part of the meal, we tasted the water—only to realize it wasn’t meant for consumption! This little mix-up kept us laughing for the rest of the trip.

Morning Adventures

After breakfast, we stepped outside into a crisp, sunny morning. The chill in the air was a refreshing contrast to Dubai's warmth. After taking a few photos, we booked a Bolt and headed to Amalienborg Palace, the official residence of the Danish royal family. We arrived just in time to witness the changing of the guard, a ceremonious event that drew a small but enthusiastic crowd.

Inside the palace, we toured the Royal Museum housed in Christian VIII's quarters. While it was interesting to see glimpses of Denmark’s royal history, we felt it wasn’t quite worth the steep entry fee—perhaps a reminder of Europe's high costs compared to Dubai.

Next, we visited Frederik’s Church, also known as The Marble Church. Its majestic dome, the largest in Scandinavia, was an architectural marvel. We also spotted the Kierkegaard statue in its grounds, adding a historical touch to the serene setting.

den05

A Sweet Stop & Scenic Walks

Just behind Frederik’s Church, we discovered Hart Bageri, a cozy bakery buzzing with customers. Despite the crowd, we managed to grab two of their signature treats—a Cinnamon Bun and a Cardamom Bun. The pastries were warm, fresh, and incredibly delicious—a definite highlight of the morning.

From there, we strolled to The King’s Garden, a tranquil green space offering scenic paths and autumn hues. Right next to the garden stands the Rosenborg Castle, a 17th-century Dutch Renaissance palace surrounded by manicured gardens. The castle is home to Denmark's crown jewels, but for us, the real treasure was the picturesque setting. Under the bright sun, the castle looked straight out of a fairytale, providing a perfect backdrop for photos.

Lunch at Torvehallerne

By noon, hunger led us to TorvehallerneKBH, a bustling urban marketplace. With its vibrant stalls selling everything from fresh produce to gourmet dishes, it was a feast for the senses. We tried Smørrebrød, a traditional Danish open-faced sandwich, alongside fish cakes and a refreshing local beer. Though the outdoor seating area was too cold for comfort, we found a cozy spot indoors to enjoy our meal.

den06

Afternoon Sightseeing

Our next stop was the Round Tower, a 17th-century observatory with a unique spiral ramp instead of stairs. Reaching the top rewarded us with a panoramic view of the city—a breathtaking sight that showcased Copenhagen's charm. The small planetarium inside the tower added an educational twist to the visit. After descending, we grabbed a quick bite—a tasty pork sausage from a nearby stand.

We then walked to Christiansborg Palace, taking in its grandeur from the outside. As time was running short, we decided to skip a detailed tour and head back to the hotel for a quick break.

Cycling Adventures

Inspired by the city's thriving cycling culture, we couldn’t resist trying it ourselves. By late afternoon, we rented Bolt bikes and set out to experience Copenhagen on two wheels. Cycling through the dedicated lanes, surrounded by locals of all ages riding effortlessly, was both fun and inspiring. It was fascinating to see how bicycles are an integral part of life here, even for office-goers in formal attire.

Wrapping up the Day

As evening approached, we made our way to Bastard Café, a lively spot filled with people enjoying board games over coffee and beer. Though we didn’t participate, we enjoyed soaking in the cheerful atmosphere before heading back to the hotel for dinner.

Dinner was a cozy affair at the hotel restaurant. We tried Venison Meatballs, Apple Tarte Tatin, and another round of beer. While the food was delicious, the portions were small and the prices steep—unsurprising for a 5-star hotel!

den07

Final Reflections

Day 2 gave us a deeper appreciation for Copenhagen’s unique lifestyle—its calm streets, bicycle-friendly culture, and early closing hours. The minimal traffic and clean air were refreshing, and it was heartening to see even executives cycling to work.

With our spirits high and our legs a little tired from cycling, we called it a night.

Day 3 - Oct 20, Friday: A Scenic Train Ride to Sweden

The day started bright and early, as we prepared for our first train journey of the trip. Our train was scheduled to leave Copenhagen Central Station at 8:30 AM, so we left the hotel around 7:00 AM.

Morning at Copenhagen Central Station

Copenhagen Central Station was an impressive sight—a massive structure with high ceilings, intricate architecture, and a bustling but orderly atmosphere. The polished floors and large open spaces made it feel welcoming despite the morning rush. It was also exceptionally clean, with clear signage that made navigation easy, even for first-time visitors.

We grabbed breakfast at a bakery restaurant inside the station, treating ourselves to fresh pastries and hot coffee. By 8:00 AM, we headed to the platform, ready to embark on our train journey.

The Oresundstag Train to Gothenburg

We had booked First Class tickets on the Oresundstag train, which connects Copenhagen to Gothenburg via Malmö. The first-class cabin was spacious and luxurious, with wide, comfortable seats, large tables, and expansive glass windows that offered unobstructed views of the landscape.

The train departed right on time, as is the norm in Scandinavia. The journey was delightful as the train crossed the Øresund Bridge and Tunnel, transitioning seamlessly from Denmark to Sweden. We marveled at the scenic beauty—lush green fields, quaint towns, and glimpses of the coastline. The cabin was quiet, with only a few other passengers, allowing us to fully enjoy the experience.

By 12:00 noon, we arrived at Gothenburg Central Station, a well-maintained and busy hub.

D3P1

Checking In at Radisson Blu

Our hotel, the Radisson Blu Scandinavia, was conveniently located just across the street from the station. Initially, I considered taking a taxi, but Deepali noticed it was only a 5-minute walk, so we strolled over and checked into our room. The family room was spacious and cozy, a perfect base for our time in Gothenburg.

Lunch at Feskekörka

After settling in, we booked an Uber to Feskekörka (the "Fish Church"), Gothenburg’s famous seafood market. The market, housed in a building resembling a church, had an impressive variety of fresh seafood and prepared dishes. For lunch, we tried a Shrimp Open Sandwich and Deep-Fried Cod with Mashed Potatoes, paired with a local beer. The food was fresh and flavorful, a true highlight of our day.

Exploring Gothenburg

Despite the overcast and chilly weather, we were well-prepared with our jackets and caps. Post-lunch, we took an Uber to Skansen Kronan, a historic fortress perched on a hilltop. The climb to the top was invigorating, and the panoramic views of the city were well worth the effort. We spent some time soaking in the vistas and capturing a few photos before heading back to the hotel.

D3P2

Evening with Family

Back at the hotel, we had a short tea break while waiting for Bijili’s cousin, Somanna, who works in Gothenburg. Once he arrived, he took us on an evening tour of the city.

Our first stop was Gustaf Adolf's Square, a prominent public square named after the founder of Gothenburg. From there, we walked to Götaplatsen, a cultural hub surrounded by iconic landmarks, including the Gothenburg Museum of Art. We snapped some photos before heading to Eva’s Paley, a charming café nearby.

At the café, we indulged in local treats—Chokladbollar (chocolate balls) and Prinsesstårta (princess cake), along with bryggkaffe, a Swedish-style brewed coffee. The bryggkaffe reminded me of Coorg coffee, and its familiar taste brought a sense of home to this Nordic adventure.

Fun with Lime Scooters

After our coffee break, we rented Lime electric scooters to explore the city further. Figuring out how to operate them was part of the fun—we discovered that a little push to gain momentum was essential. Zipping through the streets on the scooters was an exhilarating experience and a great way to see more of the city.

D3P3

Wrapping Up the Day

After saying goodbye to Somanna, we returned to the hotel, tired but content. Dinner was simple—sausage sandwiches—and we soon called it a night.

Day 4  - Oct 21, Monday : A Scenic Train Ride to Oslo & a Midnight Surprise

Our fourth day began at a relaxed pace. We woke up around 7:00 AM and enjoyed breakfast at the hotel in Gothenburg. I recall trying a Swedish delicacy—liver pâté, a pork liver spread that is quite popular in Sweden. After breakfast, we packed up and got ready for our next journey to Oslo, Norway.

A Leisurely Morning in Gothenburg

With plenty of time before our train's departure at 12:15 PM, Bijili and Deepali decided to stroll around the nearby areas while I caught up on some office work on my laptop. They captured some lovely photos during their walk. By 11:30 AM, we checked out of the hotel and walked to Gothenburg Central Station, which was conveniently close by.

Train Journey: Gothenburg to Oslo

Our train to Oslo was a Vy Train, and we had booked First Class tickets. The first-class cabin was spacious, offering even more comfort than our previous train journey. The seats were plush, and the large windows made it perfect for admiring the scenic landscapes of Sweden and Norway.

The train left on time, and we enjoyed the views of lush forests, tranquil lakes, and picturesque countryside throughout the journey. By 4:00 PM, we arrived at Oslo Central Station, which was lively and bustling with activity.

D3P4

Checking in at Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel, Oslo

From the station, Deepali and Bijili had already figured out the directions to our hotel—the Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel Oslo. While it was conveniently located, the hotel didn’t quite live up to expectations. The "family room" was surprisingly small, and the high price tag seemed unjustified. But we didn’t let that dampen our spirits.

Evening Exploration in Oslo

After a quick check-in, we headed out to explore Oslo.

Oslo Opera House: Our first stop was the iconic Oslo Opera House, a modern architectural marvel located by the harbor. The evening was crisp and chilly, but the setting sun painted the sky in stunning hues, making for some beautiful photographs. The area was alive with birds, and we soaked in the peaceful yet vibrant ambiance.

After sunset, we walked into the opera house to explore its interiors and then continued wandering through the streets of Oslo.

Karl Johans Gate: This lively boulevard, lined with shops, restaurants, and historic buildings, was perfect for an evening stroll.

For dinner, we went to Dovrehallen Restaurant on the second floor, where we enjoyed a hearty meal.

D3P5

Midnight Surprise for Bijili

As we wrapped up dinner, Deepali and I began discussing plans for a surprise. October 22nd was Bijili’s birthday, and we had secretly brought an iPhone 16 Pro as her gift. The plan was to surprise her at midnight. However, we faced a few challenges, We needed a cake, candles, and a knife, but weren’t sure where to get them at that hour. The hotel didn’t allow outside cakes or candles, making it even trickier to pull off the surprise. We told Bijili we were heading to the gym and dashed out into the chilly night (without warm clothes!) in search of supplies. After some wandering, we managed to find a small cake at a nearby store.

Back at the hotel room, we celebrated at midnight. Although we didn’t have candles or a wrapped gift, we made do with what we had. We presented the iPhone 16 Pro to Bijili, and while she was happy, she couldn’t help but comment that the gift should have been wrapped!

D3P6

A Memorable End to the Day

Despite the minor hiccups, the day ended on a joyful note.

Day 5  - Oct 22, Tuesday : Exploring Oslo and Celebrating Bijili's Birthday

Our fifth day began with a mix of excitement and warmth as it was Bijili’s birthday. The morning started with breakfast at the hotel, and throughout breakfast, Bijili was busy receiving calls from family and friends in India and the UAE wishing her a happy birthday.

Morning : Akershus Fortress & Oslo City Hall

By 9:30 AM, we called an Uber to our first destination, Akershus Fortress.: Built in the 13th century, this historical fort houses two military museums and serves as a venue for various events. The morning was bright and sunny but extremely cold. The fortress was surrounded by beautiful, colorful trees, making the spot incredibly scenic. I wondered if October was springtime in Norway, given the vivid hues of nature. The area was quiet, with very few tourists, allowing us to stroll leisurely and enjoy breathtaking views of the Oslo Cruise Terminal and the harbor. From Akershus, we walked towards Oslo City Hall, another prominent landmark. Oslo City Hall: This administrative center, known for hosting the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, impressed us with its blend of functionality and artistic design. After exploring, we took an Uber to our next destination.

D3P8

The Fram Museum: A Journey into Polar Exploration

Our next stop was The Fram Museum, one of the highlights of our Oslo visit. This museum features the 19th-century polar exploration ship Fram, expedition exhibits, and northern lights displays. For both me and Bijili, this visit was incredibly special. Last year, during our Antarctica trip aboard MS Fridtjof Nansen, we had learned about Roald Amundsen, the legendary Norwegian explorer. We even watched the movie Amundsen, which depicted his expeditions to the North and South Poles. Walking through his original ship and exhibits in the museum brought back vivid memories of the movie and our Antarctic adventure. It was fascinating to see the Norwegians' expertise in navigation and exploration, which set them apart from others in the field.

D5P1

Lunch Misstep: Oslo Street Food

After the museum, we decided to visit Oslo Street Food, hoping to experience authentic Norwegian cuisine. Unfortunately, the venue featured international food stalls, which wasn’t what we were looking for. Disappointed, we left and found a small nearby outlet where we had simple sandwiches before heading to our next destination.

Vigeland Park: A Celebration of Art

Post lunch, we took an Uber to The Vigeland Park, a sculpture park showcasing the works of Gustav Vigeland.

The park was stunning, with numerous sculptures that were both artistic and unique. Each piece depicted the human form in its natural state, with no clothing, which Deepali explained was the artist’s way of creating timeless art that transcended generations.

We spent a lot of time here, taking photos and appreciating the creativity and craftsmanship behind each sculpture.

D5P2

Evening : The Royal Palace & Birthday Celebrations

From Vigeland Park, we headed to the Royal Palace via Uber. Our driver, a chatty Pakistani gentleman, kept the ride lively, though his constant talking was a bit irritating.

At the Royal Palace, we admired the grand architecture and took some photos, but the evening was growing colder, so we didn’t stay long. Back at the hotel, we had reserved a table at the rooftop bar to celebrate Bijili’s birthdayThe rooftop offered a fantastic ambiance and views, but it was more of a drinking lounge than a dining area. Despite this, we enjoyed some drinks and light bites, marking the end of a memorable birthday celebration.

D5P3

A Restful Evening

After the rooftop celebration, we returned to our room to rest

Day 6  - Oct 23, Wednesday : Train Journey from Olso to Bergen

The sixth day of our journey was the highlight of our Nordic trip—a breathtaking train ride from Oslo to Bergen, often regarded as one of the most scenic train journeys in the world.

Morning at Oslo

We had an early breakfast at the hotel, checked out, and walked to the Oslo Central Train Station to board our Vy Train. The train was scheduled to depart at 8:25 AM, and we had carefully planned for this journey months in advance. Based on our research and blog reviews, we had chosen seats on the left side of the train, as it promised the best views. We had also booked Pluss (1st Class Cabin, Cabin 1) for added comfort.

D6P1

The Oslo-Bergen Train Journey

This 6-hour journey exceeded all expectations. It felt like stepping into a fairy-tale world, with picturesque landscapes that resembled paintings. Every turn and vista was more beautiful than the last, leaving us torn between taking photos and simply soaking in the views. The first hour offered flat plains, but as the train ascended toward the mountain plateaus, we passed through tunnels and were greeted by stunning snow-capped peaks, rivers, and villages. Midway through the journey, the weather shifted, and it began to snow and rain. The sight of ice-covered landscapes added a magical charm to the experience. Time seemed to fly by, and the 6-hour ride felt like only 2 hours. Here are a few highlights of the train route

The Oslo-Bergen line is considered one of Europe’s most scenic train rides, climbing to an elevation of 1,237 meters at its highest point. It passes through Hardangervidda, Europe’s largest high mountain plateau, offering views of pristine wilderness, fjords, and picturesque villages.

During the journey, we relaxed with beer and other drinks from the train’s café, adding a touch of luxury to this incredible adventure.

D6P2

Arrival in Bergen

We arrived in Bergen at around 3:30 PM, greeted by heavy rain. Finding a taxi was a bit confusing as we initially couldn’t locate the taxi stand, but eventually, we booked an Uber, which arrived promptly. Later, we realized that the taxi stand was on the opposite side of the station! Our hotel for the night was the Clarion Hotel, which turned out to be a cozy and spacious accommodation featuring a living hall and bedroom. After experiencing Dubai’s 50°C summers for over 25 years, the 0°C temperature in Bergen was a significant change. Despite layering up with thermals, fleece, and down jackets, we still felt the biting cold. Perhaps July or August would have been a better time for us weather-wise.

D6P3

 Exploring Bergen in the Rain

Undeterred by the rain, we borrowed an umbrella from the hotel for 30 NOK (48 hours) and set out to explore the city.

Fish Market in Bergen: Our first stop was the iconic Fish Market, a hub of local seafood and vibrant city life.

Festplassen: A recreational piazza overlooking Bergen's central lake and fountain. The site was peaceful, and we could imagine it bustling with activity during fairs and festivals.

The Unicorn Fish Restaurant: For dinner, we visited this historic restaurant, one of the oldest in Bergen. The ambiance and food were exceptional, providing a perfect end to the day.

D6P4

Good Night at Bergen : After a satisfying dinner, we returned to the hotel for a cozy night’s sleep with the heater on, preparing for a full day of Bergen city exploration the next day.

Day 7  - Oct 24, Thursday : Exploring Bergen's Majestic Mountains & Historic Charm

Bergen, with its blend of natural beauty and historical significance, gave us one of the most scenic and memorable days of our Nordic tour. We began the day with a hearty breakfast at our hotel before heading out to explore the city’s famous landmarks.

Morning at Fløibanen

At around 9:30 AM, we walked to Fløibanen, Bergen’s iconic funicular railway. The Fløibanen tram took us to the top of Mount Fløyen, which rises 320 meters above sea level. Known for its panoramic views, the mountain is one of Bergen's most visited attractions, offering a breathtaking perspective of the city, fjords, and surrounding islands. Once at the top, we took a short walk to Skomakerdiket, a tranquil lake surrounded by lush greenery. The peaceful setting, combined with the sun playing hide and seek, made for perfect photo opportunities. By 11:30 AM, we took the tram back to the base station and continued to our next destination.

D7P1

Ulriksbanen: Another Mountain Adventure

We called an Uber to Ulriksbanen, a cable car that takes visitors to the summit of Mount Ulriken, Bergen's tallest peak at 643 meters above sea level. The cable car ride offered stunning views of the rugged terrain and the city below. At the top, we encountered extremely gusty winds, with speeds around 40 kmph, making it a thrilling and unforgettable experience. Holding hands to steady ourselves, we marveled at the exclusive views of Bergen’s fjords and mountains. For lunch, we enjoyed spicy pork sausage and a cinnamon roll, which paired perfectly with the chilly weather. After taking in the views, we descended the mountain by cable car.

D7P2

Exploring Bryggen and the Fish Market

Our next stop was Bryggen, a historic harbor district and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This medieval wharf is famous for its colorful wooden-clad boathouses, narrow alleyways, and rich history. We strolled through the narrow streets, soaking in the charm and imagining life during Bergen’s days as a major Hanseatic trading post. After exploring Bryggen, we headed to the Fish Market, a vibrant hub for fresh seafood. At Fjellskål, a combination seafood store and restaurant, we indulged in tiger prawns and a hearty fish soup. To warm up in the chilly weather, I sipped on a cognac, while Bijili enjoyed a well-made cocktail.

D7P3

Evening Walk and Light Dinner

After a brief rest at the hotel, we ventured out for an evening stroll through Bergen’s streets. For dinner, we tried a mix of local and familiar fare:

Reindeer hot dog: A unique Norwegian delicacy that was both flavorful and warming.

Mcdonald’s: Deepali opted for a burger, adding a touch of familiarity to the day’s culinary adventures.

D7P4

Final Thoughts and Anticipation for Tromsø

With the day winding down, we returned to the hotel and prepared for our early morning flight to Tromsø, the coldest stop on our tour, with temperatures expected to dip to -5°C. Bergen’s mountains, history, and delicious food left us with memories to cherish, and we eagerly looked forward to the next leg of our journey!

Day 8  - Oct 25, Friday : Arrival in Tromso - The Gateway to Arctic Adventures

The day began early as we packed up and checked out of our Bergen hotel by 5:30 AM, heading to the airport via Uber. Bergen Airport was small and efficient, catering mostly to domestic flights. After a quick breakfast of sausages and croissants at the airport, we were ready for our next adventure—Tromsø, the Arctic capital of Norway.

A Scenic but Shaky Flight

Our flight, Widerøe WF-622, departed on time and provided some breathtaking aerial views. From our window seats, we admired stunning fjords, cliffs, and a colorful sunrise, which jokingly reminded me of the Northern Lights. Despite the beauty outside, the flight itself was shaky, and the crew reassured us that turbulence was normal on this route. By 9:45 AM, we landed in Tromsø and quickly collected our baggage. Stepping into the freezing Arctic air was a sharp contrast to Bergen's rain.

D8P1

Exploring Tromsø

After arriving at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Tromsø, we were too early for check-in. Leaving our luggage at the concierge, we ventured into the city to explore.

Arctic Cathedral: Our first stop was this striking modern church built in the 1960s, known for its glass façade and aluminum construction. Unfortunately, we couldn’t go inside due to a private service. After capturing some photos, we called an Uber, only to find the same driver from earlier!  Back at the hotel, we inquired about local activities like Northern Lights tours, dog sledding, and Sami culture experiences. However, it was a bit disappointing:,  Dog sledding on snow hadn’t started due to insufficient snow., Reindeer feeding and Sami culture tours were unavailable until mid-November.,  Northern Lights tours were fully booked, and many visitors reported poor visibility due to cloudy skies.

At the hotel concierge’s suggestion, we walked to the Tromsø Visitor Center for better tour options. Despite heavy rain, the staff there were incredibly helpful and guided us through the available options. We booked a dog sledding on wheels tour with Active North for the next morning (7350 NOK for three people). For the Northern Lights chase, the staff provided maps and recommendations, ensuring we were well-prepared.

D8P2

Settling In and Exploring the City

By 1:00 PM, our room was ready. We had booked a Superior Sea View room, but the view was only partial, leaving us a bit dissatisfied. After some rest and unpacking, we raised the issue with the reception. The staff promised to arrange a better room the next day, depending on availability. Later, we walked to Smørtorget, a charming café nearby. We enjoyed a light snack of quesadillas and omelets, soaking in the cozy ambiance. The evening was spent strolling through souvenir shops and exploring Tromsø’s streets. For dinner, we visited a restaurant next to the hotel, where I had a beer, Bijili opted for a Breezer, and we shared a pizza.

D8P3

Looking Ahead to Adventure

Tromsø had already begun to weave its Arctic magic, despite the rain and initial setbacks. With plans for dog sledding and the highly anticipated Northern Lights chase, we were excited for what lay ahead.

The next day promised to be one of the most adventurous and memorable of our entire tour.

Day 9  - Oct 26, Saturday  : Dog Sledding Adventure & the Magic of the Northern Lights

This day was undoubtedly the highlight of our Nordic journey, filled with a thrilling dog sledding experience and the unforgettable sight of the Aurora Borealis—a dream come true for all of us.

Morning: Setting Out for Dog Sledding

Our day began early with breakfast at the hotel before our pickup at 8:45 AM for the much-anticipated dog sledding on wheels tour by Active North. As we left, the hotel reception informed us that we’d be upgraded to a proper sea view room upon our return—a little bonus to look forward to!

The drive to Skibotn Valley was scenic, with mountains and fjords making the journey picturesque. The tour began with safety briefings and signing disclaimers. We were given special jumpsuits and boots to protect us from the mud and cold. Once dressed, we looked ready for an expedition to space, and the excitement was palpable.

D9P1

The Dog Sledding Adventure

The sledding setup consisted of troll carts pulled by teams of eight Alaskan Huskies, with two carts per group. Each cart had a driver and two passengers, and I volunteered to take the driver’s role.

The troll cart was a four-wheeled vehicle with a handlebar-like steering system and brakes. The lead dog of each team, trained to guide the group, was controlled by a guide driving the front cart.

As we set off, the excitement of the huskies was contagious. They pulled the carts with incredible energy, navigating the dirt tracks, small rivers, and forest paths.

Midway, we encountered challenges, including a river crossing where the dogs struggled to pull the cart uphill. I had to jump out to push, but in the process, I nearly missed getting back on! Deepali thought I was left behind and panicked, but thankfully, I managed to jump back in just in time.

The journey was filled with fun, laughter, and scenic views. At one point, another cart unexpectedly crossed our path, causing the dogs to bark excitedly—Bijili quipped, “This wasn’t in our syllabus!”

After 1.5 hours of sledding, we returned to the base, covered in mud but elated. We spent some time cuddling the friendly and energetic dogs before freshening up.

D9P2

Lunch and Return to Tromsø

A delicious lunch at Skibotn Hotel awaited us after the activity. We had time to relax, explore the area, and even met a fluffy, teddy bear-like dog that stole our hearts.

By 2:30 PM, we were back on the road, reaching Radisson Blu Hotel, Tromsø around 4 PM. As promised, we were moved to a spacious sea view room that finally met our expectations.

D9P3

 Evening: The Northern Lights Experience

After settling into our new room, we decided to visit Fjellheisen, the dual-gondola cable car that takes visitors up Storsteinen Mountain for panoramic views of Tromsø and the fjords.

The weather had cleared, and the night sky was filled with stars—a promising sign for spotting the Aurora Borealis. By 8 PM, we reached the top, joining a crowd of eager stargazers.

At around 10 PM, the magic began. The Northern Lights: Swirling waves of green, pink, and purple danced across the Arctic sky, creating a mesmerizing and surreal experience. Watching the Aurora Borealis unfold was the fulfillment of a long-held dream for all three of us. We were so captivated that we forgot about the biting cold and even skipped dinner temporarily. We captured several photos and spent time marveling at nature’s spectacular display. After the lights faded, we headed to the mountain-top restaurant for a quick meal of hot dogs and sandwiches before descending via cable car.

D9P4

Back at the Hotel

As we returned to the hotel, the Northern Lights made another appearance, visible from our room’s window. The combination of the sea view and the dancing lights was the perfect end to an extraordinary day.

D9P5

Reflections on the Day

This day stood out as the most adventurous and memorable of our 15-day tour. The dog sledding adventure gave us a taste of Arctic exploration, while the Aurora Borealis left us in awe of nature’s wonders. We went to bed with hearts full of gratitude.

Day 10  - Oct 27, Sunday  : A Day by the Beach, Exploring Tromso & Chasing the Aurora

After the spectacular events of the previous day, we started this day with a sense of contentment. A hearty breakfast at the hotel set the tone for a relaxed day. One highlight was the avocado toast, which was light yet filling—a perfect start to another Arctic adventure.

Morning at Telegrafbukta Beach

Our first stop was Telegrafbukta Beach, a scenic location known for its tranquil vibe and stunning views. The weather, however, was not in our favor—it was cold, windy, and drizzling. Despite the chill, we spent a few moments walking along the shore. Bijili collected some stones and seashells, but we decided to leave them behind at the hotel. From the beach, we took a short walk to Tromsø Museum and captured a few photos of its exterior.

Exploring Tromsø City

After returning to the hotel, we set out to explore Tromsø’s shops for souvenirs for friends and family. Near the shopping area, we caught a glimpse of Tromsø Cathedral, an architectural gem, though we didn’t go inside. For lunch, we picked up some goodies from a nearby bakery and enjoyed them in our room, followed by a short nap to recharge for the evening’s activities.

Evening: Aurora Chase with Professional Photographers

By 5:30 PM, we were ready for the much-anticipated Aurora Chase tour, hoping to catch another glimpse of the magical Northern Lights. The tour promised to take participants to Sommarøy Island or other optimal locations for aurora sightings. The package included hot drinks, cookies, and assistance from professional photographers for capturing the lights.

The Journey:

Despite the day-long rain and cloudy skies, the guide remained optimistic, explaining that the rain would likely clear at Sommarøy by 9 PM. The drive to Sommarøy was long and rainy, but the guide made it enjoyable by sharing facts and stories about the Northern Lights. Upon arrival, we were welcomed with hot tea and snacks, which were much appreciated in the cold weather.

The Aurora Experience

The guide led us to a dark viewing spot, where we began spotting the Northern Lights. The Aurora Display: The lights were faint and cut through by the persistent clouds, making the experience less striking compared to the previous night. For others on the tour, it was their first time seeing the Aurora, and their excitement was palpable with countless "wows" echoing in the dark. For us, having witnessed the vivid dancing lights the night before, this display felt underwhelming. While it was still a unique experience, it couldn’t match the brilliance of the previous night’s show.

Wrapping Up the Day

We returned to the hotel late at night, bringing an end to what was an average day, especially in comparison to the excitement of Day 9.

Day 11  - Oct 28, Monday  : Farewell to Norway & Arrival in Finland

Our final day in Norway turned magical as we witnessed snowfall in Tromsø, a rare and thrilling experience, especially for Deepali, who had never seen snow before.

Morning: Snowfall and Last-Minute Shopping

We began the day with a hearty breakfast at the hotel, then focused on packing since our checkout time was 12 noon. Around mid-morning, the snow began falling heavily, transforming Tromsø into a winter wonderland. Deepali was overjoyed to see snowflakes, marveling at their delicate beauty and enjoying the icy touch. Snow, after all, is formed when temperatures drop below freezing, creating ice crystals that drift gracefully from the sky. The streets were lively, with tourists and locals stepping out to enjoy the snow. We joined in, savoring the crisp air and capturing the beauty of Tromsø in white.

Afternoon: A Billing Issue and a Cozy Lunch

Before leaving, we encountered a minor issue at the hotel reception. The hotel had mistakenly charged us for an extra bed (NOK 600 per night for 3 nights). Upon reviewing the bill, we clarified that our triple-sharing booking included all arrangements, and we hadn’t requested an additional bed. After some back-and-forth, the staff reversed the charges. Relieved, we walked a short distance to Kaia, a charming restaurant with great ambiance. For lunch, I indulged in a VSOP, while Bijili tried a cocktail. The meal was satisfying and a perfect way to end our time in Tromsø.

Evening: Tromsø Airport and the Journey to Helsinki

We left the hotel at 3:30 PM, taking an Uber to Tromsø Airport. The heavy snowfall continued, and while it created stunning scenery, we were concerned it might delay our flight. However, the flight took off almost on time at 6:20 PM. The journey to Helsinki, Finland, was smooth despite the weather.

Night: Arrival in Helsinki

We landed at Helsinki Airport around 9 PM. Within minutes, we collected our baggage and booked an Uber through Deepali. The airport had a separate exit for Uber taxis, making the transfer seamless. Our destination was the Hilton Helsinki Strand, where we had reserved a sea-view room. Although it was dark and we couldn’t see the view, the room felt cozy and welcoming after the long journey. The hotel restaurant was already closed for the day, but the receptionist helpfully directed us to a nearby 24-hour McDonald’s. After grabbing a quick meal, we walked back to the hotel, enjoying the quiet streets of Helsinki.

Reflections

The day marked the end of our time in Norway, leaving us with cherished memories of snow, adventure, and Arctic beauty.

Day 12  - Oct 29, Tuesday  : A Sunny Day Exploring Helsinki

Our only full day in Helsinki was packed with sightseeing, delicious food, and vibrant city vibes. With clear skies and the sun shining bright, we made the most of our time in Finland's capital.

Morning: A Scenic Start and Breakfast Adventure

We woke up to a spectacular view of the sea and the sunrise from our room at Hilton Helsinki Strand. The golden hues of the morning light made for a stunning start to the day.

Breakfast wasn’t booked at the hotel, but our self-proclaimed F&B Manager, Deepali, had plans ready. She took us to the Old Market Hall (Vanha kauppahalli), a 19th-century venue bustling with shops and stalls offering unique Finnish delicacies. We tried some traditional Finnish specialties, enjoying the cozy ambiance and the aroma of fresh coffee and baked goods.

Exploring Helsinki’s Highlights

The day was chilly, but the bright sunshine added warmth to our explorations. Allas Sea Pool: A vibrant waterfront spot offering stunning views of the sea and the city. Though we didn’t swim, the atmosphere was lively and refreshing. Uspenski Cathedral: This Orthodox Cathedral, perched on a hill, impressed us with its ornate architecture and lavish interiors. The intricate details and the peaceful vibe inside made it a memorable visit. Love Bridge: We crossed this small but iconic bridge adorned with love locks. A sweet spot for photos and a walk. Senate Square: A bustling hub of Neoclassical architecture, surrounded by the Helsinki Cathedral, Government Palace, and university buildings. The square was lively with tourists, and the grand cathedral made for a perfect backdrop.

Afternoon: Modern Marvels and Iconic Churches

Helsinki Central Library Oodi: This ultra-modern library left us in awe with its striking design, vast collection of books, and innovative spaces like 3D printing stations. After exploring, we grabbed some coffee and snacks and relaxed before moving on. Temppeliaukio Church: Also known as the Rock Church, this unique venue is built into solid rock with a copper-lined dome. The acoustics and ambiance inside were remarkable, making it a popular concert venue.

Lunch and Rest

For lunch, we headed to the Hakaniemi Market Hall, another vibrant spot filled with local food stalls. Though the food was decent, the experience wasn’t as exciting as the Old Market Hall. After lunch, we returned to the hotel for a short nap, recharging for the evening.

Evening: Musical Monuments and Sunset Magic

Sibelius Monument: This wave-like sculpture made of over 600 steel pipes is a tribute to Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. We visited during sunset, and the glowing light added an ethereal touch to the monument. The cool weather and the soft, fading light made it a perfect spot to reflect on our day before heading back to the hotel.

Night: A Cozy Farewell Dinner

Instead of dining out, we decided to have a relaxed evening in our room. We picked up beer, Breezer, and snacks from a nearby store, creating a small party atmosphere. Dinner was simple yet enjoyable as we shared laughs and reminisced about the day’s adventures.

Final Thoughts

The beautiful weather and seamless exploration made Helsinki a memorable stop on our Nordic tour. From historic landmarks to modern marvels, the city had so much to offer.

Day 13  - Oct 30, Wednesday  : Arrival in Stockholm & Exploring the City

Our journey to Stockholm, the final destination of our Nordic adventure, was smooth and filled with excitement. With clear weather and plenty of attractions to explore, we made the most of our first day in Sweden’s capital.

Morning: Travel from Helsinki to Stockholm

We woke up early, with all our packing done the night before. At 5:30 AM, we took an Uber to Helsinki Airport, arriving at 6:00 AM. After checking in our baggage, we enjoyed a delicious breakfast at the lounge, thanks to the Citi Bank cards that provided us unlimited lounge access. One new dish we tried was Karjalanpiirakka, but it didn’t suit our palate. Our flight from Helsinki Vantaa to Stockholm Arlanda departed at 8:05 AM and took about an hour. Due to the time difference, we landed at 8:05 AM local time. Upon arrival, we debated between taking the Arlanda Express or a cab to the city center. Based on earlier discussions with ChatGPT, we opted for the Arlanda Express, a wise choice for its speed and comfort. While buying tickets from the machine, we realized that online purchases would have been 50% cheaper—a lesson learned for the return journey. The train was incredibly fast and comfortable, getting us to the city in just 18 minutes.

Exploring Stockholm

We reached Radisson Blu Royal Viking Hotel, conveniently located near the station. Since it was too early to check in, we dropped off our luggage, freshened up in the washrooms, and set out to explore the city. Drottninggatan Street: A bustling shopping street where we enjoyed the lively atmosphere.,  Parliament House: The elegant 1905 building, home to Sweden’s parliament, connected by underground tunnels.,  The Royal Palace: A grand Baroque-style palace that houses three museums and a vast library., Gamla Stan: Stockholm’s old town with cobbled streets, colorful 17th- and 18th-century buildings, and quaint cafes. We also stopped at: The Nobel Prize Museum: A quick photo stop outside the iconic museum.,

D13P2

Stortorget (Main Square): A picturesque cobblestone plaza surrounded by historic buildings., After a short snack break, we continued to Riddarholmen, a small island with palaces, government buildings, and a landmark church. The scenic views and bright sun made for fantastic photos.

Skyview – Ericsson GlobeThis unique glass gondola ride along the outside of the world’s largest spherical building gave us panoramic views of the city. The sunny weather enhanced the experience, and we clicked several photos from the top.

D13P3

Lunch at Östermalms Food HallWe dined at Lisa Elmqvist, a popular spot within the 1880s food hall. Though we had to wait 15-20 minutes for a table, the food and service made it worth it. Our meal included local beer, a cocktail, shrimp salad with avocado, and butter-fried salmon with red wine gravy. The avocado reminded me of Coorg butterfruit, and I couldn’t resist mixing it with sugar—a nostalgic treat!

D13P4

After lunch, we checked into the hotel. They upgraded us to a Junior Suite, which was spacious and perfect for our family. After resting for a while, we went shopping to pick up chocolates, sweets, and souvenirs for friends and family. With so many purchases, we had no choice but to buy an additional suitcase to fit everything. After some walking, we found an affordable travel suitcase at Clas Ohlson—a lifesaver!

We also packed away all our warm clothing, knowing we wouldn’t need it in Dubai.

Reflections on the Day

Our first day in Stockholm was filled with memorable experiences, from historical landmarks to culinary delights. With the city’s efficient transportation and beautiful weather, we managed to cover a lot of ground.

Day 14  - Oct 31, Thursday  : Farewell to Stockholm & Return to Dubai

Our final day in Stockholm started on a relaxed note but ended with a hectic airport experience. As we prepared to return home, the day was a mix of pleasant moments and unexpected challenges.

Morning: A Hearty Breakfast and Last-Minute Shopping

We started the day with a satisfying breakfast at Kaferang City, thanks to our ever-resourceful F&B Manager, Deepali. The breakfast included avocado toast and pancakes, a delicious way to fuel up for the day ahead. Afterward, we went for some last-minute shopping, picking up a few souvenirs and gifts to bring back home.

Arlanda Express to the Airport

By late morning, we returned to the Radisson Blu Royal Viking Hotel, completed our checkout, and walked to the Arlanda Express Station, conveniently located nearby. Having booked the tickets online, we saved significantly with a family ticket.

The train ride was smooth, fast, and efficient, bringing us to Arlanda Airport in no time.

D14P2

Afternoon: A Frustrating Airport Experience

Although we reached the airport on time, the experience left much to be desired: Check-In Woes : Despite checking in online, it took almost 60 minutes to get our boarding passes and check in our luggage. The airport seemed ill-equipped to handle a Boeing 777 Emirates flight, with inadequate counters and sluggish staff. Immigration Delays : The immigration process was even worse, with just two counters for non-EU passports, resulting in a long queue. Many passengers, including us, had to rush to the gates as the Emirates ground staff announced the final boarding call. Due to these delays, we had to cancel our lounge plan, much to our disappointment.

D14P3

Flight to Dubai

Our flight, scheduled to depart at 2:30 PM, was delayed slightly, taking off around 3:00 PM. The pilot even acknowledged the delays at immigration, highlighting the inefficiency. Hungry and tired, we boarded the plane, eager to be back in Dubai.

D14P4

Reflections on the Day

While the morning was enjoyable, the airport experience dampened the spirit of the day. Stockholm Arlanda Airport, with its subpar handling of international flights, was a letdown compared to the rest of our Nordic adventure.

Despite this, we carried with us the joy of a remarkable trip filled with unforgettable moments. This last leg was just a bump in an otherwise fantastic journey.

Day 15  - Nov 1, Friday  : Returning Home to Dubai

Our Nordic journey came to an official close as we landed back in Dubai, bringing with us a treasure trove of memories from an unforgettable adventure. However, our return was not without its share of challenges.

Landing at Dubai International Airport :  The flight from Stockholm was smooth and pleasant, and we landed at Dubai International Airport at around 12:45 AM. Instead of being assigned a gate, our flight had to park far away on the tarmac, requiring us to deplane via buses. Unfortunately, this was the start of a frustrating experience:

Prolonged Wait for the Buses : With continuous incoming flights, the buses were delayed, and passengers were left waiting outside on the stairs of the aircraft. Many passengers, including elderly individuals and families with young children, were visibly distressed. Some had connecting flights and were unsure if they’d make it in time.

Immigration and Baggage Collection : After a 45-minute delay, the buses finally arrived, and we were transported to the terminal. Immigration was relatively smooth, and by the time we reached the baggage area, our luggage had already arrived. Airport staff seemed surprised at the delay, asking passengers about what had happened, but no clear explanation was given.

D15P1

Home Sweet Home : We finally booked a taxi and headed home, arriving safely in the early hours of the morning. Tired but content, we unpacked and reflected on the incredible journey we had just completed.

Final Thoughts : Despite the inconveniences at the end, the trip as a whole was a fantastic experience. We explored the stunning Nordic countries, enjoyed unique adventures like dog sledding and witnessing the Northern Lights, and immersed ourselves in the beauty, culture, and cuisine of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. As we settled back into our routine, we carried the memories of this journey as a reminder of the wonders of travel and the joy of shared experiences as a family.
